# Career change at 40 Use what you already know.

Your forties

At 40, the question is usually not whether you can learn something new. It is whether you can afford the time it takes. The good news is that many solid careers are built for people who keep working while they train.

In short

A career change at 40 works best when you choose training of two years or less that fits around your current job, and a field with steady demand. Healthcare roles like LPN or surgical technologist, skilled trades and IT support are common choices. Federal WIOA funds at local American Job Centers can pay for training if you qualify.

## Start from what you have

Twenty years of work leaves you with skills: managing people, handling upset customers, keeping a schedule. Those carry into many fields. A former retail manager might do well as a [medical administrative assistant](https://careerdirecting.com/careers/medical-administrative-assistant/); a warehouse lead might move into maintenance or logistics.

## Training lengths that fit

- **Weeks:** CNA, phlebotomy, commercial driving.
- **Up to a year:** practical nursing, HVAC, medical coding, sterile processing.
- **Up to two years:** surgical technology, respiratory therapy, dental hygiene.

## Paying for it at 40

Federal Pell Grants have no age limit. Your state's American Job Center can check whether you qualify for Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act training money, especially if you were laid off. Some employers will pay for training in return for a work commitment.

## A note on physical work

Some trades and healthcare jobs are hard on the body. That does not rule them out at 40, but be honest about your back and knees, and look for roles with less lifting if that matters.

## Questions people ask

### Will employers hire someone older and new to the field?

Many will, especially in healthcare and trades with steady openings. Your track record of showing up counts.
