Career change · At 50

# Career change at 50 Shorter runway, more experience.

Your fifties

At 50 you may have 15 or more working years left. That is enough to make a new career worth it, as long as the training is short and the work suits your body. Here is how to pick well.

In short

At 50, favor training of a year or less and jobs that are not heavy on lifting. Medical coding, pharmacy technician, bookkeeping, IT support, building inspection and some driving jobs are common fits. Free help from American Job Centers, including training funds for those who qualify, is available at any age.

**Job numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics** Updated October 9, 2026. Pay figures are national medians and are not a promise of what you will earn.

## What to look for

Path 1

### Short training

A year or less, so you start earning sooner and have more years to collect.

Path 2

### Easier on the body

Seated or light-duty work if your joints are tired.

Path 3

### Experience counts

Fields where judgment and reliability matter, like inspection or patient coordination.

## Jobs worth a look

[Medical billing and coding](https://careerdirecting.com/careers/medical-billing-and-coding/) can often be studied online and done from a desk. [Pharmacy technicians](https://careerdirecting.com/careers/pharmacy-technician/) learn largely on the job. Construction and building inspectors earn a median of $74,690, and past trade experience helps.

## Run the numbers

With fewer working years, payback matters more. The [training payback calculator](https://careerdirecting.com/career-quiz/training-payback-calculator/) shows how long a program takes to pay for itself.

## Questions people ask

### Is 50 too old for a career change?

No. With 15 or more working years left, short training can pay off well.

### What are good jobs at 50 with no experience?

Roles with on-the-job training, like pharmacy technician, or short certificates, like medical coding.

### Can I get help paying for training at 50?

Yes. Pell Grants have no age limit, and job centers can check you for WIOA funds.
