# What career is right for me? Start with your life, not your dream job.

For adults with bills to pay

Most career advice starts with your passions. That is nice, but rent is due on the first. This quiz starts with the things that actually decide what is possible right now: how soon you need more money, whether you can keep working, and what your body can handle.

In short

The right career for you right now is the one you can actually train for given your money, time and health, and that pays enough to be worth it. This six-question quiz sorts you into one of five paths: a fast-start credential of a few weeks, a one-year certificate, a two-year associate degree, a paid apprenticeship, or indoor desk-based training.

**Job numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics** Updated October 9, 2026. Pay figures are national medians and are not a promise of what you will earn.

## Why we start with your situation

People rarely quit a training program because the subject bored them. They quit because the schedule collided with a job, a kid got sick, or the money ran out halfway. So the honest first question is not "what do you love?" but "what can you finish?"

The Bureau of Labor Statistics sorts every job by the education it typically takes to get in. We use the same buckets in this quiz: no formal credential, high school, a postsecondary certificate, some college, and an associate degree. Each bucket tends to mean a different amount of time before your first paycheck in the new field.

## The five paths, in plain words

Path 1

### Fast-start credential

Weeks, not months. Nursing assistant courses, phlebotomy and a commercial driver's license are the common ones. Pay starts modest, but you are working fast.

Path 2

### One-year certificate

About two semesters at a community college or trade school. Practical nursing, surgical technology and medical coding live here.

Path 3

### Two-year associate degree

A bigger investment with science prerequisites. Some of the best pay without a bachelor's degree, like dental hygiene and sonography.

Path 4

### Earn while you learn

An apprenticeship or paid on-the-job training. Slower to full pay, but you are paid from the first week.

Path 5

### Indoor desk-based training

Certificates or some college for seated work, like billing and coding or IT help desk.

## Questions people ask

### Is it too late for me to change careers?

Usually not. Plenty of programs are built for working adults, with evening classes. Our [career change guides](https://careerdirecting.com/career-change/) cover it by age.

### What if I cannot afford to stop working?

Look at the fast-start and earn-while-you-learn paths first, and check [how to pay for trade school](https://careerdirecting.com/paying-for-school/). Federal job-training money and Pell Grants can cover a lot for people who qualify.

### Can I change paths later?

Yes, and many people do. A nursing assistant can move on to practical nursing, and a help desk job can lead to network work. A short first step does not lock you in.

### Why does the quiz not ask what I am passionate about?

Because interest alone does not get you through a program. Our [career quiz](https://careerdirecting.com/career-quiz/) covers interests; this one covers whether a path fits your life right now.
