# Cosmetology school and becoming a stylist A license, a chair and a client list.

Beauty career profile

Cosmetologists cut, color and style hair and often do skin and nail services too. Every state requires a license, which means finishing a state-approved program and passing an exam. Income depends heavily on building a loyal client base.

In short

To become a cosmetologist, complete a state-approved cosmetology program, which in many states means 1,000 or more training hours, then pass your state's written and practical licensing exams. Hairdressers, hairstylists and cosmetologists earned a median of $35,790 in May 2025 per BLS, a figure that may not fully capture tips.

**Job numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics** Updated October 9, 2026. Pay figures are national medians and are not a promise of what you will earn.

## How the money works

New stylists often start on commission or hourly at a salon while they build clients. Experienced stylists may rent a booth and keep most of what they charge. Tips, retail product sales and repeat clients make a big difference, so the median is only a rough guide.

## Choosing a school

Check that the school is licensed by your state board and accredited if you want federal aid. Ask about exam pass rates, the cost of the kit and how many hours you will spend on real clients.

## Questions people ask

### How long is cosmetology school?

It depends on your state's required hours; full time, many programs take about a year.

### Is cosmetology school worth the cost?

It can be if you build a steady client list. Compare costs and pass rates, and run the numbers with the [payback calculator](https://careerdirecting.com/career-quiz/training-payback-calculator/).

### Can I do hair without a license?

In most states, not for paying clients.
