Paramedics are the most highly trained EMS providers on most ambulances. They read heart rhythms, give medications and manage airways, often making critical decisions with no doctor in the room.

In short

To become a paramedic, first become an EMT, then complete an accredited paramedic program, which often takes one to two years and includes clinical and field rotations. After that you pass the NREMT paramedic exam and get your state license. Paramedics earned a median of $60,600 in May 2025, per BLS.

## The work

Paramedics lead patient care on many calls. You assess, treat with advanced skills and decide what the patient needs on the way to the hospital. It is mentally and physically demanding, with long shifts.

## Training

Programs usually require EMT certification and often some EMT experience. Many are offered through community colleges and some lead to an associate degree.
