# How to become a phlebotomist One of the quickest ways into a hospital.

Healthcare career profile

Phlebotomists draw blood for tests, donations and transfusions. It is a short program, steady work in hospitals, labs and blood banks, and a common first step for people who want to move up in healthcare.

In short

To become a phlebotomist, finish a phlebotomy program at a community college or trade school, which usually takes less than a year, then earn a certification most employers prefer. A few states require a license. Phlebotomists earned a median of $45,230 in May 2025, and BLS projects 6.8% growth from 2025 to 2035.

**Job numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics** Updated October 9, 2026. Pay figures are national medians and are not a promise of what you will earn.

## What the job is really like

Most of the day is people work. You confirm who the patient is, calm nervous people, find a vein, draw the right tubes, label them correctly and send them off. Getting the label right matters as much as the needle. You will see children, older adults and people who faint at the sight of blood.

## The steps

### Finish high school or a GED

Most programs require one.

Step 2

### Complete a phlebotomy program

Classroom work plus supervised practice draws.

National certifying groups include the NHA, ASCP and AMT. Employers often ask for one.

Step 4

### Check your state

A few states, including California and Washington, have their own requirements.
