In short

Physical therapist assistants need an associate degree from a CAPTE-accredited program, and nearly every state requires a license, which usually means passing the National Physical Therapy Examination for PTAs. They earned a median of $68,380 in May 2025, and BLS projects 23% growth from 2025 to 2035.

## The work

You guide patients through exercises, use equipment like balance devices and treadmills, track progress and report to the physical therapist. You are on your feet, demonstrating and spotting, and you spend a lot of time encouraging people who are frustrated or in pain.

## Getting in

Programs combine classes in anatomy and kinesiology with clinical rotations. Many expect observation hours in a PT setting before you apply.

## Questions people ask

### How long is PTA school?

About two years for an associate degree.

### What is the difference between a PT and a PTA?

PTs evaluate patients and plan treatment, usually with a doctoral degree; PTAs carry out treatment under their direction.

### Is PTA a good career?

It is growing fast, pays solidly and is rewarding, but physically active.
