Respiratory therapists care for patients with breathing problems, from premature babies to adults on ventilators. It is a two-year degree path into high-stakes hospital work with strong pay.

Respiratory therapists typically need an associate degree from an accredited program and a state license, and most earn credentials from the NBRC, such as the RRT. They treat patients with asthma, COPD, pneumonia and other breathing problems and manage ventilators. The May 2025 median pay was $82,280, with 8.5% growth projected through 2035.

## What the job asks of you

You run breathing treatments, test lung function, manage ventilators and respond to emergencies. In the ICU you may be at the bedside of very sick people for long shifts. It suits people who stay steady under pressure.

## Getting in

Choose a program accredited by CoARC, which is required for the NBRC exams. Expect science prerequisites and clinical rotations. Almost every state licenses respiratory therapists.
