## What the work involves

You decontaminate used instruments, run them through washers and sterilizers, inspect every piece for damage, and assemble trays exactly as surgeons expect them. A missing clamp can delay a surgery, so attention to detail is everything. The work is physical and steady, often on rotating shifts.

## Getting certified

The most common credential is the CRCST from the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association, which asks for supervised hands-on hours along with an exam. A few states require certification to work. O*NET has the [full job description](https://www.onetonline.org/link/summary/31-9093.00).

## Why people pick it

It suits people who want to be part of patient care without bedside work, and who like order and procedure. Some move on to surgical technology or department leadership.
