# Apprenticeship vs trade school Get paid to learn, or learn first.

Choosing a route

For many trades, there are two doors in. An apprenticeship hires you and trains you on the job. Trade school teaches you first, and then you look for work. Some people do both.

In short

An apprenticeship is a paid job with structured training and classes, usually lasting several years, and costs you little or nothing. Trade school is a program you pay for, usually a year or less, that gives you skills before you are hired. Apprenticeships can be competitive to get into; trade school can help you qualify or start working sooner.

**Job numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics** Updated October 9, 2026. Pay figures are national medians and are not a promise of what you will earn.

## Side by side

| | Apprenticeship | Trade school |

## Using both

Some trade school graduates get credit toward an apprenticeship or are more competitive applicants. Ask local programs at [Apprenticeship.gov](https://www.apprenticeship.gov/apprenticeship-job-finder) whether they give credit for prior training.
