# Certificate vs associate degree Faster start or a higher ceiling.

Choosing a credential

Both are offered by community colleges and technical schools, and both can lead to good jobs. A certificate gets you working sooner; an associate degree takes longer but is required for some of the best-paid jobs without a bachelor's.

In short

A certificate usually takes a few months to a year and trains you for one job, like HVAC or practical nursing. An associate degree takes about two years and includes general education, and it is the usual way into jobs like dental hygienist and respiratory therapist. Pick by the job you want: check what BLS lists as its typical entry education.

## Side by side

| | Certificate | Associate degree |
|---|---|---|
| Typical length | Months to about a year | About two years full time |
| Coursework | Job skills only | Job skills plus general education |
| Example jobs | LPN, HVAC tech, phlebotomist | Dental hygienist, radiology tech, PTA |
| Transfer to a bachelor's | Rarely | Often, at least partly |

## Stacking credentials

Many colleges design certificates that count toward an associate degree later. Ask whether credits from a certificate apply to a degree in the same field, so you can start working and keep going.

## Questions people ask

### Is a certificate as good as a degree?

For jobs where a certificate is the standard, yes. For jobs requiring a degree, no.

### Can I get financial aid for a certificate?

Yes, at eligible schools if the program qualifies.

### Do associate degrees pay more?

On average, jobs requiring one pay more, but some certificate jobs out-earn some degree jobs.
