## The work

Dental assistants prepare rooms, sterilize instruments, hand tools to the dentist, take X-rays where allowed and keep records. Hygienists clean teeth, take X-rays, check for gum disease and teach patients how to care for their teeth.

## Getting there

Dental hygiene programs are competitive and science heavy, with prerequisites like anatomy and chemistry before you start. Every state licenses hygienists. Many hygienists started as assistants, which helps with admission and confidence.
