# Pharmacy technician vs medical assistant Behind the counter or in the exam room.

Entry healthcare

Both are quick ways into healthcare with steady demand. A pharmacy tech works with medications and insurance; a medical assistant works with patients and doctors. The setting and the level of patient contact are the big differences.

In short

Pharmacy technicians usually start with a high school diploma and on-the-job training, while medical assistants typically complete a postsecondary certificate. In May 2025 BLS data, pharmacy technicians earned a median of $45,750 and medical assistants $45,690. Medical assistants are projected to grow faster, at 12.9% through 2035.

## Daily life compared

Pharmacy techs stand at a counter much of the day, filling prescriptions, working through insurance problems and helping customers, often in retail stores with evening and weekend shifts. Medical assistants work in clinics, usually during office hours, and have hands-on contact with patients.

## Which to choose

If you like accuracy, routines and less physical contact with patients, pharmacy fits. If you want to be in the room with patients and might go on to nursing, medical assisting is the better base.

## Questions people ask

### Which pays more?

Their national medians are close; check local pay.

### Can I do pharmacy tech without school?

In many states, yes, with employer training, though rules vary.

### Which has more room to grow?

Both lead to more training. MAs often move toward nursing; pharmacy techs toward specialty or hospital roles.
