# Phlebotomist vs medical assistant One skill done all day, or a little of everything.

Entry healthcare

Medical assistants often draw blood too, which is why these two get compared. The difference is focus. A phlebotomist specializes; a medical assistant juggles clinical and office tasks.

In short

Phlebotomists focus on drawing blood and usually train in under a year, while medical assistants handle a mix of patient care and office work and often train longer. In May 2025 BLS data, phlebotomists earned a median of $45,230 and medical assistants $45,690. Medical assistants have far more openings each year.

## Who each one suits

Pick phlebotomy if you want a short, focused program and like mastering one skill. You may work in a hospital lab, a blood donation center or an outpatient lab with early morning hours. Pick medical assisting if you like variety: rooming patients, taking histories, giving injections where allowed and handling the front desk.

## Stacking them

Some people start as a phlebotomist and add medical assisting later, or the reverse. Either credential on a resume helps with the other.

## Questions people ask

### Is phlebotomy part of medical assisting?

Many medical assistant programs teach blood draws, but phlebotomists do it full time.

### Which is faster to become?

Phlebotomy programs are usually shorter.

### Which has more jobs?
