# Trade school vs college Two good roads to very different places.

Choosing a route

This decision gets framed as a culture war. It is really a math problem plus a question about what kind of work you want. Here is how the two routes differ, with places to check the numbers for any school you are considering.

In short

Trade school trains you for one specific job, usually in months to two years, and costs less in total. A four-year college takes longer and costs more but opens jobs that require a bachelor's degree, such as registered nursing or engineering. Neither is better across the board; the right one depends on the job you want and how soon you need income.

**Job numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics** Updated October 9, 2026. Pay figures are national medians and are not a promise of what you will earn.

## The two routes compared

| | Trade or technical school | Four-year college |
|---|---|---|
| Typical length | A few weeks to two years | About four years full time |
| What you earn | Certificate, diploma or associate degree | Bachelor's degree |
| Focus | One job, hands-on | Broad education plus a major |
| Federal aid | Pell Grants at eligible schools | Pell Grants and federal loans |
| Time to first paycheck in the field | Often within a year | Usually four years or more |

## When trade school makes more sense

- You already know the job you want and it does not require a bachelor's degree.
- You need to earn soon and cannot go four years without full-time pay.
- You learn best by doing rather than lectures.

## When college makes more sense

- The job you want lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry, as BLS does for registered nurses and accountants.
- You want room to change direction inside a broad field.
- You can get enough grant aid that debt stays manageable.

## Check any school before you sign

The U.S. Department of Education's [College Scorecard](https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/) shows cost, graduation rates and median earnings for graduates of most schools, including many trade schools. Look at earnings for the specific program, not just the school.

## Questions people ask

### Do trade school graduates earn less than college graduates?

On average, bachelor's degree holders earn more over a career, but averages hide a lot. Some trades out-earn many four-year majors, especially with overtime. Compare the specific job, not the label.

### Can I go to trade school and then college later?

Yes. Many associate degrees transfer, and some employers help pay for more school later.

### Is trade school cheaper?

Usually in total, because programs are shorter. Per month it can cost as much as college, so compare the full price.
