# Best trades to learn Good pay, steady demand, a clear way in.

Demand plus pay

The best trade for you is not always the one that pays the most. A trade with thousands of openings every year is easier to break into and easier to move with. This list ranks trades by yearly openings, and shows pay beside it so you can find the sweet spot.

In short

Electricians, HVAC technicians, plumbers, carpenters and auto technicians are strong trades to learn because they combine solid pay with a large number of openings each year, according to BLS projections for 2025 to 2035. Electricians, for example, earn a median of $63,190 with about 72,700 openings a year.

**Job numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics** Updated October 9, 2026. Pay figures are national medians and are not a promise of what you will earn.

## What makes a trade worth learning

Path 1

### Lots of openings

More openings means more employers to choose from and an easier first job.

Path 2

### Pay that grows

Apprenticeship trades start low and climb. Look at the median, not the starting rate.

Path 3

### Work that stays local

Repair and installation have to happen where the building is, which makes them hard to move overseas.

Path 4

### A way in you can afford

Some trades pay you to train. Others need a school program first.

## How to choose between them

Spend a day with someone in the trade if you can. Ask a local union hall or contractor whether they take helpers. Then compare two finalists side by side with the [career comparison tool](https://careerdirecting.com/career-quiz/compare-two-careers/).

## Questions people ask

### What is the best trade to learn right now?

There is no single answer, but electricians stand out in the 2025 to 2035 projections for pairing a median above $60,000 with tens of thousands of openings a year.

### What trade is easiest to get into?

Trades where BLS lists no formal credential, like construction laborer or painter, let you start quickly. See our [easiest trades list](https://careerdirecting.com/jobs-without-a-degree/easiest-trades-to-learn/).

### Is it worth learning a trade at 40?

Often, yes. Apprenticeships accept adults, and many contractors value reliability over age.
