Paying · Free training

# Free job training programs Training you do not have to pay back.

Paying for training

A surprising amount of job training is free to the learner, or even pays you. The catch is that each source has its own rules. Here are the main ones and who they are for.

In short

Free job training is available through WIOA funds at American Job Centers, registered apprenticeships that pay you while you learn, Job Corps for ages 16 to 24, employers that train new hires, and Pell Grants that do not need to be repaid. Service members can use DoD SkillBridge before leaving the military.

## The main sources

| Source | Who it is for | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| [WIOA](https://careerdirecting.com/paying-for-school/wioa/) | Eligible adults and laid-off workers | Approved training programs |
| [Registered apprenticeship](https://www.apprenticeship.gov/) | Anyone accepted by a sponsor | Paid on-the-job training plus classes |
| [Job Corps](https://www.jobcorps.gov/) | Eligible young people ages 16 to 24 | Residential training, often with housing and meals |
| [Pell Grant](https://studentaid.gov/understand-aid/types/grants/pell) | Students with financial need | Tuition at eligible schools |
| [SkillBridge](https://skillbridge.osd.mil/) | Service members near separation | Civilian training and internships |
| Employer training | New hires | Training for that employer's jobs |

## Combining them

You can often stack these. A Pell Grant might cover tuition while WIOA covers tools and fees, or an employer might train you after a short WIOA-funded course.

## Avoid "free" scams

Real programs do not charge you to apply. Be wary of anyone asking for payment to unlock a grant.

## Questions people ask

### Is there free training for adults?

Yes. WIOA, apprenticeships and some employer programs serve adults of any age.

### Do I have to pay back free job training?

Grants and WIOA funds do not need repayment. Some employer programs require you to stay for a time.

### How do I find free training near me?

Start at your local American Job Center.
