Paying · Workforce Pell

# Workforce Pell Grants for short programs Pell money for 8 to 15 week training.

New for 2026-27

Until 2026, Pell Grants could not be used for most very short training programs. Workforce Pell changes that for approved programs of 8 to 15 weeks. The rules are strict, so the key question is whether the specific program you want is approved.

In short

Workforce Pell Grants, new for the 2026-27 award year, can pay for short job-training programs of 150 to 599 clock hours that last at least 8 but fewer than 15 weeks. The program must be approved by both the state's governor and the U.S. Secretary of Education and meet completion, job placement and earnings tests. Students in these programs get Pell only, no federal loans.

**Job numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics** Updated October 9, 2026. Pay figures are national medians and are not a promise of what you will earn.

## The program rules

| Rule | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Length | 150 to 599 clock hours, or 4 to 15 semester credit hours |
| Duration | At least 8 weeks and fewer than 15 weeks |
| Approval | State governor and U.S. Secretary of Education |
| Outcomes | At least 70 percent completion and 70 percent job placement |
| Value | Tuition and fees cannot exceed the program's value-added earnings |

These rules are in federal regulations at [34 CFR Part 690, Subpart H](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-34/subtitle-B/chapter-VI/part-690/subpart-H).

## How to check a program

Ask the school's financial aid office in writing: "Is this program approved for Workforce Pell?" Do not assume a short program qualifies; many very short courses, like some driving programs, may fall below the 8-week floor.
