Getting started · Overview

# Trade school, explained Everything to know before you enroll.

Start here

Trade school is any program that trains you for a specific job, usually in a year or two. If you are just starting to look, this section covers what it is, what it costs, how long it takes and how to tell a good school from a bad one.

In short

Trade school, also called vocational or technical school, trains you for a specific job like electrician, medical assistant or HVAC technician. Programs typically run from a few weeks to two years and end in a certificate, diploma or associate degree. Community colleges and private schools both offer them, and accredited programs can qualify for federal aid.
