# How long is trade school? Weeks, months or two years, depending on the job.

Planning your time

The honest answer is that it depends on the job, the credential and whether you go full or part time. Here are typical ranges for common programs, and the things that stretch or shrink them.

In short

Trade school can take anywhere from a few weeks to two years. Short programs like nursing assistant or commercial driving often run weeks; certificates in HVAC, practical nursing or medical coding usually take several months to about a year; associate degrees like dental hygiene or respiratory therapy take about two years. Part-time study stretches each one.

## Typical lengths by credential

| Credential | Typical length | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Short course | A few weeks | Nursing assistant (75 hour federal minimum), commercial driving, phlebotomy at some schools |
| Certificate or diploma | Several months to about a year | HVAC, practical nursing, medical coding, welding |
| Associate degree | About two years full time | Dental hygiene, respiratory therapy, radiology tech |
| Apprenticeship | Often three to five years, paid | Electrician, plumber, sheet metal |

## What changes your timeline

- Part-time or evening schedules can double program length.
- Prerequisites, like anatomy for health programs, add a semester or more.
- Waitlists for competitive programs can delay your start.
- Licensing exams and required work hours come after graduation.

## Ask the school

Ask for the program's length in hours and in calendar months, and how many students finish on time. A school should be able to tell you.

## Questions people ask

### What is the shortest trade school program?

Nursing assistant and some commercial driving programs can be finished in a few weeks.

### Can I do trade school part time?

Many schools offer evening and weekend options, which take longer.

### Is an apprenticeship the same as trade school?

No. Apprenticeships are mostly paid on-the-job training with some classes, and take longer.
