# How to choose a trade school A checklist before you sign anything.

Picking a program

Two schools can offer programs with the same name and very different results. Use this checklist to compare them on what actually matters: whether you can get licensed, whether graduates get hired, and what you will really pay.

In short

To choose a trade school, confirm it is accredited by an agency the Department of Education recognizes, that the program qualifies you for any license your job needs, and that its graduation, exam pass and job placement rates are strong. Compare the full cost after aid and make sure the schedule fits your life before you sign.

## The checklist

Step 1

### Accreditation

Search the school in the Department of Education's [accreditation database](https://ope.ed.gov/dapip/). Accreditation is required for federal aid.

Step 2

### Licensing fit

For licensed jobs, confirm the program is approved by your state board.

Step 3

### Outcomes

Ask for graduation, licensing exam pass and job placement rates in writing.

Step 4

### Total cost

Tuition, fees, tools, uniforms, books and exam fees, minus grants.

Step 5

### Schedule

Days, nights, weekends, and where clinical or externship hours happen.

## Compare schools side by side

[College Navigator](https://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/) shows costs, aid and graduation rates. [College Scorecard](https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/) shows earnings for some programs.

## Warning signs

The FTC advises caution with schools that push you to enroll on the spot, guarantee jobs or are vague about costs. A good school will let you take the paperwork home.

## Questions people ask

### Does accreditation really matter?

Yes. Without it you cannot use federal aid, and credits and credentials may not be recognized.

### Is a community college better than a private trade school?

Often cheaper, but private schools may start sooner or have more flexible schedules. Compare outcomes.

### How do I check job placement rates?

Ask the school in writing and ask how they define "placed."
