# Is trade school worth it? For you, in your town, at this price.

The honest math

"Worth it" is a personal number. It depends on what the program costs you after grants, what you give up while training, and what the job pays where you live. Here is how to work it out in about fifteen minutes.

In short

Trade school is worth it when the program costs less, after grants, than the extra pay it brings in over a few years, and when graduates actually get hired. Check the job's local pay, the program's graduation and job placement record and its total price. If it pays back within two or three years, it is usually a strong bet.

## A four-number test

1. **Total cost after grants.** Tuition, fees, tools and books, minus any grants.
2. **Lost pay while training.** Zero if you keep working; a lot if you stop.
3. **Pay after training.** Use local pay, not the national median, and assume you start below the median.
4. **Pay now.** What you would earn if you stayed put.

## Red flags that make it not worth it

The Federal Trade Commission warns about schools that pressure you to sign up fast, promise jobs or make claims about earnings they cannot back up ([FTC guidance](https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/choosing-vocational-school-or-certificate-program)). Walk away from pressure.

## Signs a program is worth it

- Accredited, with published graduation and placement rates.
- Clinical sites or employer partners you can name.
- Graduates you can talk to who are working in the field.

### What trade school pays the most after graduation?

Programs for jobs with high medians, like dental hygiene and radiation therapy, lead to the highest pay, but they also take the longest.

### Is trade school worth it if I already have a job?

Often yes, if you can train part-time and the new job pays meaningfully more.

### How do I find a program's job placement rate?

Ask the school in writing. Many publish it; if they will not share it, that is a warning sign.
