Training payback calculator How long until the program pays for itself.

Free tool

Pick the job you are training for, enter the cost and your current pay, and the calculator shows how many months of the new paycheck it takes to earn back what you spent, including pay you give up while in school.

In short

This calculator compares your current pay with the national median for the job you choose, then works out how long the raise takes to cover the training cost plus any pay you lose while studying. A payback under about two years is a strong result. Try a lower expected salary too, because starting pay is usually below the median.

Job numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor StatisticsUpdated October 9, 2026. Pay figures are national medians and are not a promise of what you will earn.

Training payback calculator

Put in what the training costs and what you earn now. We use the national median pay for the job you pick, or type your own expected pay.

A planning estimate before taxes, not a promise. Starting pay is usually below the median, so try a lower number too. Pay data: BLS, May 2025.

How the math works

First we add the training cost to the pay you would lose during training, based on how much you plan to keep working. Then we compare your yearly pay now with the expected pay after training. The difference, spread over months, is the monthly raise. Total cost divided by that raise is your payback time.

Getting good inputs

  • Cost: use the price after grants. Ask the school for a written total including tools, uniforms and exam fees.
  • Expected pay: look up pay where you live and use a starting figure, not the median.
  • Months: use the real schedule, including clinical or externship time.

Questions people ask

No. It is a before-tax estimate and does not include loan interest.

Why do you use national median pay?

It is the most consistent number available for every job. Change the expected pay box to use a local figure.
