On a call
An EMT assesses the patient, controls bleeding, splints injuries, gives oxygen and CPR, and safely moves the patient. A paramedic does all that and more: reading heart rhythms, giving drugs, placing advanced airways and making more complex decisions in the field.
Training and testing
Both levels usually take the National Registry exams, and states license EMS providers. Paramedic programs often take one to two years and expect EMT experience first.
Questions people ask
Should I become an EMT before a paramedic?
Yes. Paramedic programs generally require EMT certification and often field experience.
How much more do paramedics make?
The May 2025 median gap is about $44,470 versus $60,600.
Is EMT a good first healthcare job?
It is fast to train for and gives real patient experience, useful for nursing or physician assistant paths too.
