Paying for training

A surprising amount of job training is free to the learner, or even pays you. The catch is that each source has its own rules. Here are the main ones and who they are for.

In short

Free job training is available through WIOA funds at American Job Centers, registered apprenticeships that pay you while you learn, Job Corps for ages 16 to 24, employers that train new hires, and Pell Grants that do not need to be repaid. Service members can use DoD SkillBridge before leaving the military.

Combining them

You can often stack these. A Pell Grant might cover tuition while WIOA covers tools and fees, or an employer might train you after a short WIOA-funded course.

Avoid "free" scams

Real programs do not charge you to apply. Be wary of anyone asking for payment to unlock a grant.
