What the work looks like
Coders read through doctors' notes and choose the right diagnosis and procedure codes. Billers send claims, follow up on denials and work with patients on balances. In small offices one person often does both.
Training and certification
Most programs cover anatomy, medical terminology and coding systems, and many are online. After that, a national certification shows employers you know the code sets. New coders are often hired into entry roles before working remote.
Who it suits
People who like puzzles, rules and working alone do well. If you want healthcare without blood or night shifts, it is one of the best fits.
Questions people ask
Can I do medical coding from home?
Many experienced coders do, but first jobs are often on site.
How long is medical coding school?
Certificate programs often take several months to a year.
Is medical coding being automated?
Software already helps, and that may change the job. Coders who understand complex cases and audits are likely to stay in demand.
